Presidents of Georgetown College Maldon Browning Adams 1913-1930
Adams served as president of Georgetown College from 1913-30. He was born in 1869 in Clarksburg, West Virginia to John Browning and Martha Columbia (Holden) Adams. He attended Broaddus Classical and Scientific Institution, Clarksburg, 1888-90, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he received the Th. B. degree in 1893. The New Castle Baptist Church, New Castle, KY ordained him in 1891. He served as pastor of the church until 1893. When he left, he held pastorates at North Fork Baptist Church, Mason County, KY, 1893-98, and First Baptist Church, Frankfort, KY, 1898-1910. Adams served as corresponding secretary (1910-13), vice president (1918), and president (1918-22) of the Kentucky Baptist Education Society of Kentucky. He was also president of the Kentucky State Baptist Young People's Union, 1889-1904; president of the Kentucky Anti-Saloon League, 1900-07; and assistant moderator of the General Association of Baptists in Kentucky in 1909. He was president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Standardization Commission, 1923-27; chairman, Kentucky Commission for the Selection of Rhodes Scholars, 1913-19; president, Kentucky Association of Colleges and Universities; member, Kentucky Education Association; and president, Southern Baptist Education Association, 1926-28.
As president of Georgetown College, Adams abolished the old Georgetown Academy,
which had been a part of the college since its founding; gained accreditation
for the college by the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the
Southern States and membership with the American Association of Colleges; built
a new gymnasium; briefly banned fraternities; endowed a chair of Bible and
Religion; organized the first college drama group, (The Maskrafters); started an
International Relations Club; and sold the Old Female Seminary property for use
as a Georgetown City High School. Adams died April 18, 1945 in Maysville, Kentucky. Please direct inquiries to Dr. Glen Taul
