Two New Library Staff Members
Return to Georgetown College.
This summer the LRC has hired
two former Georgetown College students,
Randall Myers and Kyle Potter.
 |
 |
| Randall |
Kyle |
Randall is the new
Evening Supervisor and joins us after
recently moving from
Savannah,
Georgia. He is a former
student and is planning on completing his
degrees here at Georgetown College. He is also a huge World of Warcraft fanatic
and enjoys power-lifting as well.
Kyle, once again,
will be
employed as a Library Technician focusing on
the media collection and research
instruction. He received his B.A. degree in
History from Georgetown College in 2003, and
spent time as a church intern, library
technician and bookseller before completing
the M.Th. (Applied Theology) degree in early
2008 at Regent's Park College, University of
Oxford. His research interests include
Christian mission and monastic movements,
and he is active in religious education.
Kyle is excited about teaching research
methods to students and making library
services even more welcoming to the campus
community.
The Library is very excited about the
experience and enthusiasm these two new
staff members bring to the LRC. Please
re-welcome them to the College community!

The LRC is Unique
(and Delicious)
The LRC
won Most Unique at the 2006 IFC Chili
Cook-Off. Librarians Susan Martin and
Misha Mueller served white chili (with
chicken instead of beef) and vegetarian
chili (with soy-based beef substitute).
The Librarians are not sure which chili
was most unique or if they won the award
for offering two unusual variants. In
her acceptance speech, Ms. Mueller said
it was “an honor to be nominated” and
thanked the academy.

Banned Book Week
The 25th
Banned Books Week is September 23-30, 2006.
The LRC is celebrating with a small display
in the Juvenile Collection on the 2nd
floor. The display includes books challenged
or banned 2005-2006, 2004 Banned Books
Resource Guide, and Censorship: A
World Encyclopedia. As usual, the
challenged books have stickers explaining
why they were challenged. The resource
guide, arranged alphabetically by author,
details known instances of challenging,
banning, and/or burning. It even includes
legal case citations. There are indexes for
books challenged for religious reasons, for
political reasons, etc.
For more
information on school and library
censorship, go to
www.ala.org. ALA has expanded their
Banned Books Week site to include links to
book burnings in the 21st
century, an online poll to vote for your
favorite banned book, and more.

Conference in New Orleans.
From June 21st to
June 29th, approximately 18,000 librarians
attended the American Library Association’s
annual conference in New Orleans. Michele Ruth
(Acquisitions Manager) and Misha Mueller

Director meets legislators in Washington, D.C.
Mary Margaret Lowe, your Library Director, met with
each of our Senators and Congressmen for
National Library Legislative
Day on May 1 & 2. Ms. Lowe joined
State Library Commissioner Jim Nelson and other
librarians in outlining library goals to each of our
government representatives.

at his Washington,
D.C., office for NLLD
Ms. Lowe
also visited the Library of Congress (of course!);
the Freer, Sackler, and Hirschorn Museums, and the
National Gallery of Art; the Jefferson, Lincoln,
FDR, and Vietnam Memorials; and the new World War II
Memorial. The azaleas were in bloom when she visited
the National Arboretum.
Ms. Lowe highly
recommends that you visit our nation's capital - she
will even lend you her guidebooks!

LRC
Evening Supervisor a hit!
Mark Fleshman recently performed in the
GC Maskrafters production, The Fantasticks.
Mr. Fleshman wowed audiences as El Gallo (a role
created by Jerry Orbach in the original Broadway
production). El Gallo acts as narrator, puppet
master, villain, and hero of the musical. He took
the part temporarily while Corey Cross recovers from
a knee injury.

GC
Librarians chair and present at spring conferences.
Library
Director Mary Margaret Lowe chaired this year’s
Academic Library Section / Special Library Section /
Special Library Association (Ky Chapter) /
Association of College and Research Libraries (Ky
Chapter) Joint Conference at Jenny Wiley State
Park. One conference attendee applauded Ms. Lowe’s
efforts as, “...the most organized conference I’ve
ever attended.”
Misha Mueller added a
twist to her presentation on this year’s theme,
“Information: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.” Ms.
Mueller discussed librarians’ susceptibility to
technostress and led participants in cubicle-safe
exercises. Her paper based on the presentation will
appear in
Library Hi-Tech News.
Susan Martin and Misha
Mueller co-presented at the Southeastern Library
Association / Tennessee Library Association Joint
Conference in Memphis. Their presentation,
“Streakers, Stalkers, and Squatters,” was
well-attended despite a tornado warning. Two college
librarians asked permission to incorporate the
Martin/Mueller presentation into their institutions’
training manuals. A number of librarians suggested
Ms. Martin and Ms. Mueller “take the show on the
road” and tour public and academic libraries in
Tennessee this summer. One library trustee from
Georgia asked Ms. Martin and Ms. Mueller to speak to
his library board. The GC librarians plan to write a
short article based on their presentation.

librarians Misha Mueller and Mark Walters assisted the
students. Local historian/author Ann Bevins and GC
archivist Dr. Glen Taul were on hand to answer
